Green Close, Bed and Breakfast , in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds

A warm welcome is offered to those seeking bed and breakfast accommodation at Green Close, Combe.

By road, we are approximately 4 miles from Woodstock, 6 miles from Witney and 11 miles from Oxford.

The village is situated above the River Evenlode valley between Long Hanborough and Stonesfield.

Green Close is a Grade 2 house within the Conservation Area of Combe.

We have three letting bedrooms. Two rooms are doubles, both ensuite. The other room is a twin with its own private bathroom.

Guests have the use of a private sitting room adjacent to the dining room.

Rooms

One of the bedrooms has a UK kingsize bed (that is, 5') together with en suite bathroom with a shower over the bath.  Another has a standard 4'6'' divan with en suite shower room.  The twin room has beds which can be put together to make a large double.  This room does not have an en suite but it does have its own private bathroom just across the passage with bath and separate shower.

The showers are all powered from a good sized pump so you are ensured a good soaking.

Guests have their own sitting room just off the dining room.

The house itself has late mediaeval origins (the current dining room and study) with additions from the 17th, 18th and 20th centuries.

Combe and nearby

Green Close  sits within the Combe conservation area. The parish church, famous for its mediaeval wall paintings, is just a short walk away.

You can not only get into Blenheim Park from the village but you can also walk to  the North Leigh Roman Villa with its preserved mosaic floor, just about a mile away.

At the bottom of the valley lies Combe Mill which periodically gets up steam and is open to visitors.

Getting to Woodstock and Oxford is easy.  If you are tired of driving, there is a bus service running from the village every hour.  Mainline trains (Paddington to Hereford) stop at nearby Hanborough station.

Breakfasts

For breakfast you can expect eggs from our hens (when laying), with home made bread, marmalade and fruit compotes. Honey is supplied from the village.

We can offer full  English (usually eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, and beans or any combination) with a variety of cereals, our own granola, yoghurt, and toast, tea, coffee, and fruit juice.

 We don’t do evening meals.

Breakfasts are normally laid in the dining room (the oldest part of the house) but can be set up in the garden when the weather is clement.

Eating out

The Cock Inn, the village pub, is about 75 yards away. BUT, this pub is presently closed for refurbishment. We are told that it is due to re-open in October of 2023.

Otherwise, there are numerous pubs and restaurants in the area.

We are happy to make suggestions.

Caution

Because the house is old, there are different floor levels and occasional steps up and down (none more than 3 inches). Let us know if this might be a problem.

The main staircase is fairly wide with a substantial oak banister.

Arrangements

We are pretty flexible on general arrangements.  We like to have an idea of when guests plan on arriving.  Normally that is after 4.00pm but we can make it earlier if that is more convenient.

We are happy to take children but we do rather leave it up to the parents to make the decision as to whether their children will be OK.  There is no problem with us - we sleep at the other end of the house - but we do need to take into account the peace of other guests.  If you think that your child might not settle, then it is probably best if you don't bring him or her.

Dogs.  Depending on who else we have staying, we will take dogs,  but, (big but), we do insist that dogs should live and sleep downstairs.  At the moment (March 2023) we have a 10 week old puppy so we may need to be a bit cautious about canine guests.
